Creating an App Password in Microsoft 365

Creating an App Password in Microsoft 365

Complexity: Easy

When to use this: When your account has Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) enabled and you are setting up email on an app that doesn’t support MFA such as the built-in mail app on smartphones or the Outlook Desktop application.

Step 1:  Go to My Sign-Ins (microsoft.com). Sign into your account if prompted.

Step 2: Click + Add method

Step 3: From the Drop down, pick App password and click Next.

Step 4: Create a name for your App password, such as what application you are going to use it on. Click Next.

Step 5: Copy the new password generated and type or paste it into your mail application when prompted for a password. Click Done.

Note: If you need to set up the application again in the future, you will need to generate a new app password if you do not have the original saved in a secure location.

Remember to never leave passwords written down where others may find them or saved in non-secure locations such as a Word or text document saved to your desktop.
